Texas Cosmetology Licensing Requirements

In order to obtain a license in Barbering, Cosmetology, Esthetics, or Nail Technology, in the state of Texas, individuals must complete the requirements listed below. Other requirements may apply.

Cosmetology: 1500 hours
Esthetician: 750 hours
Nail Technology: 600 hours
Barber: 1500 hours

Licensing Fee Schedule: (Fees subject to change)

Barber Two – Year License: $70
Cosmetology: Determined by the Board
Esthetician: Determined by the Board
Nail Technologist: Determined by the Board

Continuing Education Requirements:

Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) approved continuing education (CE) hours are required to renew a cosmetology license. The hours required must be completed within the term of the license being renewed.
Cosmetologist: Four (4) hours sanitation and eight (8) hours curriculum for a total of 12 hours.
Nail Technologist: Four (4) hours sanitation and four (4) hours curriculum for a total of 8 hours
Esthetician: Four (4) hours of sanitation and four (4) hours of curriculum for a total of 8 hours.

Reciprocity:

Reciprocity is granted to individuals with licenses from another State whose requirements are the same as, or greater than, Texas’ requirements.
