Rhode Island Cosmetology Licensing Requirements

In order to obtain a license in Barbering, Cosmetology, Esthetics, Nail Technology or Electrology in the state of Rhode Island, individuals must complete the requirements listed below. Other requirements may apply.

Cosmetology: 1500 hours
Esthetician: 600 hours
Nail Technology: 300 hours
Electrology: 650 hours
Barber: 1500 hours

Application: $31.25
Biennial Renewal Fee: $37.50

Reciprocity:
Reciprocity is considered on an individual basis.
Apprenticeship is offered for the Barber program in Rhode Island. After the apprentice trains two (2) years under a Master Barber, he/she may take the written and practical exams. After successful completion of the exams the apprentice will be issued a license.
For endorsement into Rhode Island, individuals must meet the educational requirements, hours, have a high school diploma, and pass both a written and practical exam, either National or State developed.
