District of Columbia Cosmetology Licensing Requirements

In order to obtain a license in Cosmetology, Nail Technology, Skin Care, Esthetician, or Barbering in the District of Columbia (Washington, DC), individuals must complete the requirements listed below. Other requirements may apply.

Cosmetologist: 1500 hours
Nail Technician: 350 hours
Skin Care: 600 hours
Esthetician: 600 hours
Barber: 1500 hours

Licensing Fee Schedule: (Fees subject to change)

Fee schedule is for both Cosmetology and Barbering.

Exam Fee: $55
Application Fee: $65
License Fee: $110

Reciprocity:

Reciprocity is granted to all applicants whose current license is from a state whose requirements are equivalent to those of DC. Credit for work experience may be granted.
